UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, BOND HOUSE
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA | The Bond House is the first new building on the re-envisioned “green street” of Brandon Avenue. The residence hall is named for the late Julian Bond, one of the most prominent leaders of the civil rights movement and a beloved University of Virginia history professor. The 313-bed residence houses upper class students. Its portal offers a warm welcome at the terminus of Brandon Avenue inviting the whole street to enjoy the courtyard within. To maximize use of the space throughout the day, the first floor and its extension outside is also home to the new UVA Democracy Initiative, an interdisciplinary enterprise that integrates research, teaching, and public engagement. MVLA worked collaboratively with Goody Clancy to interweave buildings, landscape, and spaces for learning in outdoor gathering spaces and lawns. This academic program supports student success creating a vital living-learning environment for upperclassmen. Stormwater management is integrated into the site through landscaped water elements. ADA compliant ramps provide access from Brandon Avenue through Bond’s portal into the courtyard and to the adjacent Bice House main entry. This vibrant residential space celebrates UVA’s commitment to community and sustainability.
